Description
Seen in left lateral profile, the common carotid artery ascends within the carotid sheath deep to the sternocleidomastoid and bifurcates near the superior border of the thyroid cartilage into the internal carotid artery, which continues superiorly toward the skull base, and the external carotid artery, which gives off cervical and facial branches. From the external carotid, the superior thyroid artery descends anteroinferiorly, the lingual and facial arteries course anteriorly toward the floor of mouth and face, and the occipital and posterior auricular arteries run posteriorly toward the scalp and auricle. Blue venous channels overlay the same corridor, with the internal jugular vein lying lateral to the carotid arteries and receiving tributaries that parallel the facial drainage.
