Description
Rendered in a left lateral view of the male head and neck with a semi-transparent craniofacial envelope, the common carotid artery ascends within the carotid sheath and bifurcates near the superior border of the thyroid cartilage into the external carotid artery (more anterior) and internal carotid artery (more posterior and deeper). Superior to the bifurcation, the external carotid gives off cervical and facial branches as it courses anterosuperiorly toward the parotid region, while the internal carotid turns toward the carotid canal and continues to the intracranial circulation. Over the cerebral convexity, fine cortical arterioles spread across the gyri and sulci, mapping the superficial arterial territories against the outlined skull, mandible, and nasal cavity. Orientation is clear. That carotid split is a common landmark in both teaching and practice because it concentrates clinically actionable anatomy into a small space: the carotid sinus and carotid body sit at the bifurcation, and the internal carotid artery is the major conduit for anterior circulation stroke. Atherosclerotic plaque at the carotid bifurcation underlies carotid stenosis, a target for carotid endarterectomy and stenting, and this lateral perspective helps you visualize why surgical exposure follows the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid while protecting the hypoglossal nerve and vagus nerve within the sheath.
