Seen in lateral aspect, the semi transparent male head and upper neck are outlined to expose the extracranial and intracranial arterial tree in red. The common carotid artery ascends in the neck and bifurcates into the internal carotid artery coursing superiorly toward the skull base and the external carotid artery giving anterior and posterior branches to the face and scalp. Over the convexity of the cerebral hemisphere, cortical gyri and sulci remain visible beneath the pial arterial network, with smaller arterioles radiating over the lateral surface. Spatial relationships read cleanly in this angle. Superficial temporal and occipital arterial branches track superficially over the lateral scalp, while deeper channels associated with the internal carotid system distribute to the cerebral cortex and deep cranial compartments through the carotid canal region. Separation of skull, brain parenchyma, and vessels helps you teach what is truly extracranial (scalp and face supply) versus what becomes intracranial circulation. A useful distinction.
