Description

Rendered in right lateral view through a transparent male head and neck, the common carotid artery ascends within the carotid sheath and bifurcates near the superior border of the thyroid cartilage into the internal and external carotid arteries. The external carotid gives off familiar superficial branches, including the facial artery coursing anterosuperiorly across the mandible and the superficial temporal artery ascending anterior to the auricle, with the occipital artery tracking posteriorly toward the scalp. Deep to these, the internal carotid enters the skull base and contributes to intracranial arterial supply, shown in relation to the calvaria, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae. Spatial relationships are clear. Superficial versus deep. This lateral projection matters when you need to teach or plan around the carotid bifurcation and its branch pattern, where carotid atherosclerotic plaque most often accumulates and where endarterectomy exposure is typically obtained along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid. The course of the facial and superficial temporal arteries also matches common bedside and procedural landmarks, from palpating the temporal pulse to selecting safe planes for facial laceration repair, parotid surgery, or superficial temporal artery biopsy in suspected giant cell arteritis. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy blocks, vascular surgery teaching files, and medical publishing layouts that require a clean arterial map against skeletal context, including patient education on carotid stenosis, stroke risk, and pulse points. Suitable for slide decks on external carotid branches, scalp vascularity, and intracranial inflow via the internal carotid system. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
