Description
Running along the anterior arm, the paired brachial veins (venae comitantes) track proximally with the brachial artery, beginning as the paired radial and ulnar veins in the forearm and uniting near the cubital fossa. Superficially, the cephalic vein ascends on the anterolateral arm within the superficial fascia, while the basilic vein courses on the anteromedial side and pierces the brachial fascia in the mid arm to join the deep system. Across the anterior elbow, the median cubital vein bridges cephalic to basilic, lying superficial to the bicipital aponeurosis; distally, the dorsal venous network of the hand feeds into the cephalic and basilic pathways around the wrist. An anterior perspective on the brachial veins matters because it places venipuncture landmarks and deeper neurovascular relationships in the same frame. The bicipital aponeurosis forms a protective roof over the brachial artery and median nerve in the cubital fossa, so a low, medially directed needle intended for the median cubital or basilic vein risks arterial puncture or median nerve irritation if the target sits deep or has anatomical variation. Valves and perforating connections between superficial and deep veins also help explain why thrombophlebitis can extend and why proximal compression alters superficial filling.
