Description
Spanning the superficial muscular layer of an adult female, the anterior thorax and upper limb are rendered with the pectoralis major sweeping from the clavicle and sternum laterally toward the humerus, its inferior border forming the anterior axillary fold beneath the deltoid cap. Along the arm, the biceps brachii sits anterior to the humerus with the brachialis deep to it, while the triceps brachii occupies the posterior compartment and outlines the posterior arm contour. In the face, the masseter thickens over the ramus of the mandible inferior to the zygomatic arch, with adjacent muscles of facial expression arranged around the orbit, nose, and oral aperture. Overlying the pectoral region, the mammary gland is differentiated from surrounding subcutaneous tissue, with lobular glandular elements positioned superficial to the pectoralis fascia. Orientation matters here because the relationship of the breast parenchyma to the pectoralis major and anterior axillary fold defines key landmarks in breast imaging and surgery, including the usual plane of subpectoral implant placement and the surgical dissection plane during mastectomy or chest wall resection. The depiction of glandular lobules also supports teaching the distinction between superficial fascia, glandular tissue, and underlying muscle, a frequent point of confusion when correlating surface anatomy with mammography, ultrasound, or MRI.
