Description
Shown in anterior perspective with the knee in flexion, the distal femur and proximal tibia align to form the femorotibial joint while the patella tracks centrally within the femoral trochlear groove as part of the patellofemoral articulation. The medial and lateral femoral condyles flank the intercondylar region, and the tibial plateau sits inferior to them with its articular cartilage surfaces clearly defined. Anterior stabilizing soft tissues are suggested, including the patellar ligament coursing inferiorly from the patella toward the tibial tuberosity, with adjacent capsular thickenings consistent with the medial and lateral patellar retinacula. Flexion is where patellofemoral contact mechanics become clinically legible, because the patella engages deeper in the trochlea and joint reaction forces rise as the quadriceps moment arm changes.
