Description

Seen in lateral profile, the deep part of the masseter (pars profunda) occupies the posterior portion of the mandibular ramus, lying deep to the superficial masseter and immediately anterior to the parotid region and external ear. Its fibers run inferoposteriorly from the deep surface of the zygomatic arch and zygomatic bone to insert along the upper half of the lateral surface of the ramus and toward the coronoid process, sitting inferior to the temporalis as it converges onto the coronoid. Surrounding facial expression muscles are suggested in the cheek and perioral region, while cervical musculature extends inferiorly into the neck for context. Separating the deep masseter from its superficial layer matters when you are teaching force vectors in mandibular elevation and stabilization at the temporomandibular joint, because the deep fibers contribute a strong closing moment while also helping control mandibular position during clenching and power stroke chewing. Clinically, this is the portion often implicated in myofascial pain and hypertrophy in bruxism, and it is a key structure to recognize when planning botulinum toxin injection depth and avoiding diffusion toward the parotid gland or the facial nerve branches crossing the masseteric fascia. A surgical landmark. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy labs, dental and orthodontic teaching on masticatory mechanics, and OMFS or ENT educational materials covering masseteric space pathology, TMJ-related pain patterns, or injection technique diagrams for masseter reduction.
