Description
Arising from the posteromedial aspect of the knee, the inferior medial genicular vein courses proximally and posteriorly along the medial tibial condyle toward the popliteal venous confluence. Medial hamstring components and the medial head of gastrocnemius form the superficial muscular frame, while the distal femur and proximal tibia define the articular contour deep to the vessel. Small venules accompany the genicular branches, paralleling adjacent red arterial channels and converging as they approach the popliteal fossa. Orientation is posterior, with the vein positioned medial to the midline of the joint and inferior to the femoral condyles. Posterior genicular venous anatomy matters when you are mapping periarticular drainage pathways that communicate with the popliteal vein, including potential routes for thrombus propagation from calf tributaries into the deep system. This view also clarifies why posterior knee procedures can encounter troublesome venous bleeding: the inferior medial genicular vein and its satellites sit close to the posteromedial capsule and the tendinous interval between semimembranosus and medial gastrocnemius.
