Inferior Medial Genicular Vein, Medial View

Description

Along the medial aspect of the male knee, the inferior medial genicular vein courses posterior to the tibial collateral ligament (medial collateral ligament) and deep to the pes anserinus tendons as it approaches the periarticular venous plexus. Superiorly, the vessel lies below the medial femoral epicondyle and adjacent to the medial head of gastrocnemius, then tracks anteriorly toward the joint line near the medial tibial condyle. Nearby landmarks commonly included in this medial perspective include the distal femur, proximal tibia, medial meniscus region, and the patellar ligament sitting more anterior. Small venules and communicating branches typically surround it. Medial genicular venous anatomy matters when you are correlating periarticular pain, swelling, and postoperative bleeding with the knee’s dense anastomotic network, since these veins can enlarge with chronic synovitis and can be a persistent source of oozing during medial arthrotomy or soft tissue releases. Endovenous patterns around the genicular region also come up in phlebology discussions of collateral pathways in deep venous obstruction and in mapping atypical varicosities that track toward the great saphenous system.
