Description
Running along the lateral thigh, the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery is shown emerging from the profunda femoris system near the proximal femur and tracking inferiorly toward the lateral aspect of the knee. Its course lies anterior to the lateral intermuscular septum and deep to the iliotibial tract, traveling between the vastus lateralis and adjacent musculature before approaching the peripatellar arterial network. Distally, the vessel contributes to the genicular anastomosis around the patella, with companion veins rendered in blue alongside the dominant red arterial pathway. Clear vessel color coding makes the superficial and deep channels easy to separate at a glance. From a lateral perspective, this artery matters because it is a predictable feeder for the anterolateral thigh and a frequent pedicle in reconstructive planning. Surgeons raising an anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap commonly rely on perforators from the descending branch, and preoperative mapping often tracks this long segment as it runs toward the knee. Around the distal femur and patella, its contribution to the genicular anastomosis becomes clinically relevant in collateral flow when the superficial femoral artery is stenosed or occluded. A practical landmark. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and lower limb vascular teaching to anchor discussions of profunda femoris branches, patellar blood supply, and the relationship of the descending branch to the vastus lateralis and iliotibial tract. It also fits vascular surgery and plastic surgery texts when illustrating collateral pathways at the knee and pedicle selection for thigh-based flaps.
