Description
Centered on the apex of the mandible, the paired mentalis muscles sit just inferior to the lower lip (labium inferius), flanking the midline symphysis menti and tapering toward their cutaneous insertions in the skin of the chin. Superiorly, their fibers lie deep to the orbicularis oris at the labiomental fold, while laterally they blend with adjacent depressor labii inferioris near the mental foramen region. Bony context includes the maxilla, mandible with dentition, and the anterior nasal aperture, with semi-transparent soft tissue allowing the chin musculature to be read against skeletal landmarks. An anterior view of the mentalis matters because it clarifies how this small muscle everts and protrudes the lower lip and wrinkles the chin, actions that shape facial expression and oral competence.
