Description
Running deep in the posterolateral compartment of the leg, the fibular (peroneal) veins accompany the fibula and track superiorly toward the popliteal fossa. Paired venae comitantes flank the fibular artery, receiving venous tributaries from the lateral malleolar region and the posterolateral foot, then course medial to join the posterior tibial veins to form the tibioperoneal trunk. Superficial channels over the lateral leg and dorsum of the foot can be appreciated in parallel, including the small saphenous vein ascending posterior to the lateral malleolus. Perforating veins link the superficial network to the deep system at interval. Clear appreciation of the peroneal venous pathway matters when you are teaching deep venous return from the calf and ankle, because this system lies outside the most familiar great saphenous territory and is easily underemphasized. Duplex ultrasound evaluation for suspected deep vein thrombosis often centers on the femoropopliteal segment, but calf DVT can involve the peroneal veins and propagate proximally through the tibioperoneal trunk. This is where anatomy drives the scan protocol. Use this plate in lower limb anatomy and vascular modules to contrast superficial versus deep venous drainage, or in sonography and radiology teaching files when correlating calf vein thrombosis patterns with cross-sectional and Doppler findings. It also fits surgical education around posterolateral approaches to the ankle and fibula, where deep veins travel with the peroneal artery and demand careful retraction and hemostasis.
