Description
Centered on the posterolateral compartment of the male leg, the fibular (peroneal) vein is shown as a paired deep vessel (venae comitantes) closely applied to the fibula and tracking superiorly toward the popliteal fossa. Distally, tributaries from the lateral malleolar region and calcaneal plexus converge, while proximally the vein courses posterior to the fibula in company with the fibular artery and deep to the fibularis (peroneus) longus and brevis. Venous valves appear along the lumen, oriented to support antegrade flow against gravity. Superficial drainage pathways may be included for context, with the great saphenous vein running anteromedially from the foot and leg toward the thigh. Attention to the fibular vein matters because it is easy to overlook clinically, yet it is a common site of isolated distal deep vein thrombosis in the calf, sometimes extending into the tibioperoneal trunk and popliteal vein. The close relationship to the deep posterior and lateral compartments makes it a useful teaching target when correlating duplex ultrasound windows, calf pain patterns, and postoperative thromboprophylaxis discussions. Valve anatomy also sets the stage for understanding reflux physiology and how superficial varicosities can coexist with competent or incompetent deep venous segments.
