Description
Arising from the common tendinous ring at the orbital apex, the superior rectus muscle runs anteriorly along the superior aspect of the globe to insert on the sclera just posterior to the corneoscleral limbus. Superior to its belly, the levator palpebrae superioris courses forward toward the superior tarsus, and the illustration emphasizes the way the superior rectus fascial sheath blends with the levator complex in the anterior orbit. Medially and laterally, the remaining extraocular muscles frame the eyeball, while the superior oblique tendon is shown as it passes through the trochlea to angle posteriorly and laterally across the superior globe. The optic nerve exits the posterior pole of the eyeball and tracks back toward the orbital apex within the muscle cone. Clean relationships. Clear planes. That fascial continuity between superior rectus and levator palpebrae superioris matters when you teach or plan surgery around eyelid position. Superior rectus recession for vertical strabismus can induce postoperative upper eyelid retraction because the levator aponeurosis and superior rectus sheath move together, so this depiction helps explain why lid height can change even when the lid is not the target.
