Description
Semi-transparent cranial soft tissues reveal the cerebral hemispheres with cortical gyri and sulci, with the cerebellum positioned posteroinferiorly in the posterior cranial fossa. Superimposed venous channels trace from the superficial scalp and face toward the cranial base, then descend through the neck in longitudinal trunks consistent with the internal jugular vein deep to the sternocleidomastoid and the more superficial external jugular vein coursing over it. Deep in the infratemporal fossa, the pterygoid venous plexus sits medial to the mandibular ramus and lateral to the lateral pterygoid muscle region, communicating superiorly with cavernous sinus pathways via emissary veins. Relationships matter here. Clinically, the pterygoid venous plexus is a key conduit between facial venous drainage and the cavernous sinus, a route discussed in cavernous sinus thrombosis and other intracranial septic complications because these channels lack valves and permit retrograde flow. This lateral-to-superior vantage also supports teaching of why posterior epistaxis control, maxillary artery surgery, and mandibular osteotomies risk brisk venous bleeding in the infratemporal fossa, and why temporomandibular joint approaches can encounter engorged plexus veins.
