Description
Positioned deep to the erector spinae mass, the rotatores muscles are highlighted as short, obliquely oriented fascicles spanning from the transverse process to the lamina and spinous process of the vertebra immediately superior, most apparent in the thoracic region. Posteriorly, the trapezius and latissimus dorsi form broad superficial planes over the scapulae, while the rhomboid major and minor sit medial to the scapular borders and the deltoid and triceps brachii frame the shoulder girdle laterally. Red accents draw the eye to the vertebral column and rib cage, where the rotatores lie closest to the posterior elements, medial to the angles of the ribs and tucked against the vertebral arches. Small muscles. Big landmarks. Rotatores are often taught as part of the transversospinalis group (with multifidus and semispinalis), and this posterior layering clarifies why they can be hard to appreciate in dissection until the larger spinal extensors are reflected.
