Description
Centered in the middle mediastinum, the adult male heart appears posterior to the sternum and costal cartilages and anterior to the vertebral bodies, with the fibrous and serous pericardium enclosing it as the animation progresses. The right atrium and right ventricle occupy a more anterior position, while the left atrium sits posteriorly near the esophagus and the left ventricle forms the left lateral and inferior cardiac border above the diaphragm. As the sequence advances, the ascending aorta rises superiorly from the left ventricle, the pulmonary trunk courses anteriorly then bifurcates, and the superior vena cava enters the right atrium from above.
