Description

Intercostal nerves course in the intercostal spaces and give anterior and lateral cutaneous branches to the breast, while arterial and venous channels track alongside and through the gland toward the parasternal and axillary regions. Spatial landmarks read clearly. Medial breast tissue lies close to the sternum, lateral tissue approaches the anterior axillary line. This perspective matters because breast surgery and imaging are organized around predictable relationships to pectoralis major, the inframammary fold, and the axillary extension where lymphatic drainage concentrates. Surgeons planning mastectomy, lumpectomy, or sentinel lymph node biopsy must respect the superficial fascial planes and the course of intercostal nerve branches to preserve nipple-areolar sensation, and radiologists map ductal architecture when evaluating duct ectasia, intraductal papilloma, or segmental calcifications suspicious for ductal carcinoma in situ. Vascular context also informs flap planning and postoperative hematoma risk.
