Description

Displayed breast anatomy includes the superficial skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue overlying the mammary gland (glandula mammaria), with lobules arranged around major lactiferous ducts that converge toward the nipple and areola. Deep to the gland, the retromammary space separates breast tissue from the pectoralis major fascia, while the pectoralis major muscle forms the principal posterior relation across the anterior thoracic wall. Arterial and venous channels course through the parenchyma and superficial fascia, and cutaneous and intercostal nerve branches approach from the lateral thoracic wall toward the areolar complex. Lymphatic vessels track from the gland toward regional nodal basins, commonly along the lateral and superior quadrants. That tissue layering matters in practice. Breast carcinoma spreads along lymphatic routes, so a clear depiction of glandular tissue embedded in fat, and the directionality of lymphatic drainage toward the axillary nodes, supports accurate staging and operative planning for sentinel lymph node biopsy. The posterior relation to the pectoralis major and its fascia also sets the dissection plane in mastectomy and helps explain why tumors fixed to the chest wall can present with reduced mobility, while skin tethering can reflect involvement of suspensory ligaments and superficial lymphatics. A clean topographic map. Use this artwork in preclinical gross anatomy and breast imaging teaching to orient learners before correlating mammography and ultrasound findings with parenchymal distribution, ductal architecture, and neurovascular pathways, and in surgical education materials covering lumpectomy, mastectomy planes, and axillary assessment. It also suits patient-facing oncology and reconstructive surgery brochures where accurate relationships between fat, gland, and pectoral musculature reduce ambiguity.
