Description
Cutaway anatomy of the adult female mammary gland is presented over the anterior thoracic wall, with the nipple and areola complex centered on the surface and the glandular parenchyma arranged as lobules that converge into lactiferous ducts coursing anteromedially toward the nipple. Superficial adipose tissue occupies the spaces between lobules and extends peripherally to shape the breast mound, while the deep surface of the breast rests on the fascia over pectoralis major, whose fibers run inferolaterally toward the humerus. Glandular tissue lies superficial to the muscle, separated by the retromammary space, and the ductal system tracks from deep lobules to the anterior papilla. Spatial understanding of the breast relative to pectoralis major matters in both imaging and operative planning: most breast parenchyma projects supero-laterally toward the axillary tail (of Spence), and lesions in this region can be missed without targeted clinical exam or appropriate mammographic positioning. The ductal-lobular architecture also frames common pathology, from ductal carcinoma in situ tracking along ducts toward the nipple to lactational mastitis and abscesses that follow lobular units, and it clarifies why subpectoral implant placement differs biomechanically from prepectoral positioning.
