Description

Anterior chest wall anatomy is rendered with the female mammary gland (glandula mammaria) occupying the superficial fascia over the pectoralis major, its lobules and lactiferous ducts converging toward the nipple and areola. Deep to the gland, pectoralis major fibers run inferolaterally from the clavicle and sternum toward the humerus, establishing the retromammary space that permits limited mobility of the breast on the fascia. Superficial veins course within the subcutaneous tissue, while segmental cutaneous nerves traverse medially and laterally toward the nipple areolar complex; accompanying lymphatic channels track toward axillary and parasternal pathways. Spatially, the gland extends superiorly toward the second rib region and inferiorly toward the inframammary fold, with lateral tissue approaching the anterior axillary line. Clinical relevance sits in these relationships. Breast surgery and imaging interpretation both depend on understanding which structures lie superficial to pectoral fascia and which track along it, because local invasion in carcinoma may tether the breast to the chest wall and produce dimpling through Cooper ligaments. Sensory supply from the anterior and lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves (classically T4 at the nipple) explains postoperative numbness patterns after reduction mammoplasty or mastectomy, and the superficial venous and lymphatic networks map directly onto routes of hematogenous spread and sentinel lymph node drainage in the axilla. Landmarks matter. Use this asset for gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching in medical, nursing, and midwifery curricula, and for oncology, radiology, and plastic surgery publications that need clear depiction of the gland, pectoral musculature, and neurovascular and lymphatic context. It also suits patient education handouts explaining lumpectomy versus mastectomy planes and why axillary staging is performed. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
