Description
Centered on the anterior thoracic wall, the mammary gland is shown superficial to the pectoralis major, with glandular lobules embedded in adipose tissue and converging lactiferous ducts directed toward the nipple and areola. Cooper’s suspensory ligaments traverse from the dermis toward the deep fascia, partitioning the breast parenchyma into lobes and maintaining its relationship to the retromammary space. Laterally, the breast tail extends toward the axilla along the anterior axillary fold, where the pectoral fascia and the edge of pectoralis major form a clear deep boundary. Intercostal nerves course from posterior to anterior within the intercostal spaces and send cutaneous branches medially and laterally to the breast and nipple-areolar complex. Arterial supply is typically represented by perforators from the internal thoracic artery medially and branches of the lateral thoracic artery laterally, with venous drainage tracking similar routes toward the axillary and internal thoracic systems. A practical teaching point. Sensory innervation from the lateral and anterior cutaneous branches of T2 to T6 explains why breast pain and postoperative numbness follow dermatomal patterns, and why the intercostobrachial nerve (T2) is at risk during axillary node dissection. This view also supports surgical planning for mastectomy, reduction mammoplasty, and implant pocket selection by clarifying the plane between glandular tissue and pectoralis major and the expected location of neurovascular pedicles. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and breast imaging curricula to correlate surface landmarks with deep fascial planes, ductal anatomy, and the pectoral musculature used as reference on mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. It also fits well in patient-facing surgical consent materials that need accurate depiction of the nipple-areolar complex, ductal convergence, and the regional neurovascular anatomy.
