Description
Framed within a lateral section of the adult male orbit, the lacrimal artery is traced along the superolateral orbital compartment as it courses toward the lacrimal gland in the fossa of the frontal bone. Arising from the ophthalmic artery, it runs anteriorly along the superior border of the lateral rectus, with small muscular branches to the extraocular muscles and recurrent twigs returning posteriorly toward the dura. The globe sits medial to the glandular complex, while the optic nerve exits posteriorly at the orbital apex with accompanying ophthalmic vessels, placing the lacrimal artery in clear relation to the lateral orbital wall and roof. For teaching orbital vascular anatomy, the lacrimal artery is a useful landmark because it anchors the lateral branch pattern of the ophthalmic artery and explains why superolateral orbital pathology can bleed briskly. Injury may occur in lateral orbitotomy, repair of zygomatico-orbital fractures, or lacrimal gland surgery, and iatrogenic compromise can contribute to gland ischemia or postoperative hematoma. Short anastomoses with the middle meningeal artery via the recurrent meningeal branch also matter. They form a clinically relevant extracranial to intracranial connection. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy blocks, ophthalmology teaching files, and operative atlases covering lateral orbit approaches, lacrimal gland excision, and management of orbital trauma. It also fits well in radiology and angiography primers when correlating orbital arterial territories with contrast-enhanced CT or catheter studies.
