Description
Arising from the ophthalmic artery within the orbit, the lacrimal artery courses anterolaterally along the superior border of the lateral rectus toward the lacrimal gland in the superolateral orbital fossa. From a superior sectional perspective through the skull and orbital roof, you would expect the vessel to sit lateral to the optic nerve as it approaches the lacrimal gland, with small terminal branches tracking anteriorly toward the lateral palpebral ligament and lateral canthus. Nearby landmarks logically include the sphenoid and ethmoid contributions to the posterior orbit, the orbital plate of the frontal bone superiorly, and the extraocular muscle cone surrounding the globe. This relationship matters when you need to teach or plan work in the superolateral orbit, where bleeding from lacrimal artery branches can complicate lacrimal gland biopsy, orbitotomy, or lateral canthotomy and cantholysis performed for orbital compartment syndrome. Clinicians also use these arterial pathways to explain why inflammatory or neoplastic processes of the lacrimal gland can produce pain and swelling at the lateral upper eyelid and why vascular injury near the lateral palpebral ligament may present with brisk anterior orbital hemorrhage. A small artery, a messy field. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy teaching (orbit and adnexa), ophthalmology lectures on the ophthalmic artery branches, or operative illustrations for lateral orbitotomy and eyelid procedures where the lateral canthal tendon and its vascular neighbors must be respected.
