Description
Running in a parasagittal section through the male orbit, the lacrimal artery is traced as a sinuous branch in the superolateral orbital compartment, coursing from the ophthalmic artery along the lateral wall toward the lacrimal gland. The globe sits centrally within the bony orbit, with conjunctival and episcleral vessels spreading over the anterior sclera, while the optic nerve exits posteriorly at the orbital apex. Just medial and slightly inferior to the arterial course, the abducens nerve pathway is indicated on its approach to the lateral rectus region, a tight neurovascular neighborhood. Bone contours of the frontal bone, zygomatic bone, and lacrimal bone frame the soft tissues. For orbital surgery, this relationship matters. When you elevate the periorbita along the lateral wall during lateral orbitotomy, lacrimal gland biopsy, or hemostasis for superolateral orbital bleeding, the lacrimal artery is a common culprit and its proximity to neuro-ocular motor structures explains why traction and cautery can translate into diplopia complaints. Small vessel, real consequences. The same arterial territory also underpins tear apparatus perfusion, so iatrogenic compromise can add postoperative dry-eye symptoms to an already inflamed ocular surface.
