Description

Anterior thoracic anatomy is presented with emphasis on the superficial and deep mammary veins coursing through the female breast parenchyma and converging toward the periareolar venous plexus beneath the areola. Venous channels ramify within the glandular lobules and interlobular septa, then pass posteriorly toward the pectoral fascia overlying pectoralis major, with lateral tributaries trending toward the axillary region and medial tributaries approaching the parasternal line. Adipose tissue occupies the superficial and peripheral spaces around the gland, while the pectoralis major forms the posterior muscular bed. Clear laterality and depth cues support orientation. Venous drainage of the breast matters in both oncologic spread patterns and operative planning, because the mammary veins communicate with the axillary, thoracoepigastric, and internal thoracic venous pathways and can provide collateral routes in superior vena cava obstruction.
