Description
Centered on the medial aspect of the female breast, the illustration traces the superficial and deep medial mammary veins as they course within the subcutaneous tissue and between lobules of glandular parenchyma. Lobules and surrounding adipose tissue occupy the bulk of the breast, while lactiferous ducts converge anteriorly toward the nipple and areola, passing superficial to the pectoral fascia. Posteriorly, fibers of pectoralis major form the muscular bed, with venous channels running anterior to the muscle and trending medially toward parasternal drainage. Medial venous anatomy matters when you are thinking about pathways of spread and operative planes. Parasternal (internal thoracic) venous drainage parallels the internal thoracic vessels and sits close to the parasternal lymph node chain, a route that becomes clinically relevant in medial breast malignancies and in cross midline venous and lymphatic communication.
