Description

Running along the medial aspect of the female breast, a superficial-to-deep venous network drains the glandular parenchyma toward the parasternal region, where it converges with the internal thoracic (internal mammary) veins and their perforating branches. Within the adipose tissue, fine venules course between lobules and lactiferous ductal units, with larger collecting veins tracking in the fibrous stroma toward the areola and nipple. Deep to the mammary gland, the pectoralis major forms the posterior boundary over the ribs and costal cartilages, providing a clear plane for appreciating the relationship between the breast, its retromammary space, and the anterior chest wall. Small cutaneous nerves accompany the vessels in the superficial fascia. Medial venous drainage matters because it links the breast to the parasternal and intercostal venous pathways, a common route discussed in patterns of tumor spread and in the hemodynamic basis for prominent superficial veins. Surgeons plan medial incisions, skin-sparing mastectomy flaps, and perforator-based reconstructions around internal thoracic perforators, where venous outflow can be the limiting factor for flap congestion and wound-edge viability. It is also the anatomy behind brisk bleeding from parasternal perforators during dissection close to the sternum. Use this artwork for gross anatomy teaching on the superficial fascia and mammary gland, for breast surgery texts covering parasternal perforators and internal thoracic venous connections, and for radiology education when correlating superficial venous patterns with mammography, ultrasound, or contrast-enhanced MRI of the breast. Suitable for patient-facing materials on breast vascularity when framed in clear, clinician-reviewed language. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
