Description
Medial mammary veins course through the glandular parenchyma toward the parasternal region, collecting blood from smaller venules within the lobules and along the lactiferous ducts as they converge toward the midline. Lobules and ducts sit superficial to the pectoralis major fascia, separated by adipose tissue and fibrous septa (Cooper ligaments) that tether skin to deeper connective tissue. Blue venous channels run anteromedially, interlacing with the supporting stroma before draining into the anterior thoracic venous network near the sternum. Relationship to the nipple and areola is clear. Medial venous drainage matters because it parallels lymphatic pathways that also favor the parasternal (internal thoracic) chain, a frequent route for medial breast carcinomas to reach nodes not sampled by axillary dissection. Surgeons planning lumpectomy or mastectomy need a mental map of superficial and deep venous channels to anticipate bleeding during flap elevation and to preserve perfusion of the skin envelope and nipple-areolar complex in reduction or reconstructive procedures.
