T4 Vertebra

Description

Presented in lateral profile, the mid thoracic vertebral column is rendered with adjacent vertebral bodies stacked superior to inferior and separated by pale intervertebral discs. The T4 vertebra is singled out in blue, with its vertebral body positioned anterior to the vertebral arch and the spinous process projecting posteriorly into the thoracic soft-tissue plane. Superior and inferior articular processes rise and descend at the junction of pedicle and lamina, their zygapophysial facets oriented to favor rotation while limiting flexion and extension relative to the lumbar region. T4 sits near the level of the sternal angle and the T4 to T5 intervertebral disc, a common surface landmark used to approximate the tracheal bifurcation and the beginning and end of the aortic arch in thoracic imaging and operative planning. Facet alignment at this level matters in thoracic spine trauma and degenerative change, where painful zygapophysial joints or subtle subluxation can alter segmental motion and contribute to local kyphosis.
