Description
Oriented in a lateral profile of the male head and upper neck, the posterior auricular vein is traced as a blue superficial vessel ascending posterior to the auricle and lying just posterior to the mastoid process of the temporal bone. Superiorly it receives small venules from the retroauricular scalp, then courses inferiorly toward the parotid region, where it typically joins the retromandibular vein near or within the parotid gland before continuing drainage toward the external jugular system. Adjacent arterial companions from the external carotid system, along with the calvaria, nasal cavity, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae, provide fixed bony landmarks for orientation. Clear relationships matter. Venous drainage around the ear becomes clinically relevant in lateral parotid and mastoid surgery, where the posterior auricular vein and its tributaries can be a source of brisk superficial bleeding and a guide to the posterolateral margin of the parotid region. This pathway also anchors teaching on emissary connections and scalp drainage patterns, a useful context when discussing spread of infection from the posterior scalp and periauricular tissues or planning incision placement to avoid problematic veins. The lateral perspective keeps the vessel’s posterior-to-anterior course legible.
