Description
Arising from a plexus of venules in the posterior scalp, the occipital vein is traced in lateral profile as it descends inferiorly from the occipital region toward the upper neck. Its course lies superficial to the occipital bone and posterior to the auricle, then continues along the posterolateral cervical soft tissues overlying the upper cervical vertebrae. Bony landmarks such as the calvaria, mastoid region, and cervical spine provide a fixed reference for the vessel’s posterior position relative to the external carotid system and its tributaries in the face. For teaching venous drainage, this lateral perspective clarifies how scalp blood returns via superficial channels that communicate with deeper cervical pathways, a point that often gets lost when only arterial anatomy is emphasized. The occipital vein’s relationship to the posterior scalp and upper neck also matters clinically in lacerations of the scalp, where brisk bleeding and retraction of cut vessels can complicate hemostasis. It also orients the reader to venous routes that can participate in spread of infection from the scalp to deeper neck spaces through emissary and communicating veins. Neuroscience and head and neck anatomy courses can use this plate when introducing scalp layers, venous drainage patterns, and the distinction between superficial and deep cervical vessels.
