Description
Seen from the posterior head and upper cervical region, the occipital vein ascends within the scalp over the squamous part of the occipital bone and converges toward the superior nuchal line, where it typically drains to the confluence of veins around the occipital artery before reaching the external jugular venous system. Small venules and rami radiate laterally across the occipital scalp, while deeper connections course medially toward the midline. Parietal emissary veins are shown passing through the parietal foramina near the sagittal suture, creating a direct communication between superficial scalp veins and the superior sagittal sinus via the dural venous sinuses. Posterior cervical vertebrae and the craniovertebral junction provide bony landmarks for the relationship of superficial vessels to the skull and upper neck. Posterior scalp venous anatomy matters because emissary veins are valveless, so infection and tumor can track from the scalp to intracranial venous channels, and bleeding from scalp lacerations can be brisk when the galea aponeurotica prevents vessel retraction. This posterior perspective also helps clarify why procedures such as occipital nerve blocks, suboccipital craniotomy positioning, or posterior cervical exposure must account for the occipital venous plexus and its variable drainage patterns.
