Description
Originating in the posterior scalp, the occipital vein is traced as a blue-caliber vessel coursing inferiorly over the occipital region toward the upper cervical triangle, running superficial to the deep nuchal musculature and posterior to the sternocleidomastoid. Lateral facial and cervical landmarks frame its course, with the trapezius forming a broad posterior boundary and the temporalis and masseter defining the lateral craniofacial musculature anteriorly. Deeper cervical outflow pathways are suggested by the nearby internal jugular vein and carotid artery, establishing the relationship between superficial scalp drainage and the major neck vessels. Orientation is lateral, so anterior facial structures sit to the right of the field while the occiput and nuchal region occupy the posterior aspect. Teaching the occipital vein in context matters because its drainage pattern bridges the scalp and the cervical venous system, and it often joins the internal jugular vein, external jugular vein, or the suboccipital venous plexus with notable anatomic variation.
