Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of the upper arm, the brachialis lies deep to the biceps brachii and hugs the anterior surface of the distal half of the humeral shaft, its fibers converging inferiorly toward the proximal ulna. Posterior to it, the triceps brachii occupies the posterior compartment and approaches the olecranon via the triceps tendon, creating a clear anterior to posterior compartment contrast along the lateral border of the arm. The humerus forms the central bony axis, with the ulna positioned medial to the radius at the elbow, receiving the brachialis insertion on the ulnar tuberosity and coronoid process region. Skin and superficial fascia are rendered translucent to maintain surface context while keeping the muscle belly readable. Lateral arm views are where students often confuse brachialis with brachioradialis and even the lateral head of triceps, so emphasizing the brachialis as an anterior compartment muscle that crosses only the elbow (not the shoulder) clarifies its role as the primary elbow flexor across forearm positions. That distinction matters clinically when localizing weakness after musculocutaneous nerve injury (C5 to C6), where elbow flexion declines even if the biceps contour remains visible.
