Description
Arising from a segmental (tertiary) bronchus, the intrasegmental bronchus branches within the pulmonary segment as a fine bronchial tube coursing distally toward the subpleural region, shown in posterior orientation. From this rear view, the bronchial lumen and cartilaginous support appear as a pale tubular pathway embedded in segmental parenchyma, with the more proximal conducting airway aligned superiorly and medially and the smaller intrasegmental divisions fanning inferiorly and laterally. Adjacent lung substance frames the airway, emphasizing how quickly the bronchial tree becomes intraparenchymal after leaving the mainstem bronchus and lobar bronchi. Delicate caliber. Clear relationships. Posterior perspectives matter when you are teaching or planning around the bronchopulmonary segments, because segmental bronchi define surgical and bronchoscopic targets more reliably than surface fissures. Segmentectomy and wedge resections depend on identifying the correct intrasegmental bronchus and its distal branching pattern, and posterior anatomy becomes clinically relevant in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) where the operative field often approaches hilar structures from behind. This view also supports interpretation of bronchoscopy and CT airway reconstructions when mucus plugging or postobstructive atelectasis localizes to a specific segmental distribution. Ideal for respiratory tract modules in gross anatomy and pulmonary medicine courses, and for surgical atlases illustrating segment-based lung resections, bronchial anatomy, or posterior hilar relationships in the adult thorax. Radiology teaching files can also pair this with coronal CT images to map intrasegmental bronchi to bronchopulmonary segments. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
