Description
Viewed from the right (dextrolateral) aspect, the male heart is rendered in white with the coronary venous system picked out in blue along the epicardial surface. The small cardiac vein courses on the anterior surface of the right ventricle near the right margin, then tracks superiorly in the right atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus toward the right atrium. More posteriorly, the middle cardiac vein ascends in the posterior interventricular sulcus from the inferior aspect toward the coronary sinus region, marking the groove between the ventricles even when the interventricular septum is not directly visible. Great vessels at the base (ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk with proximal branches) provide orientation superiorly. A right-sided venous view matters when you need to teach where myocardial venous return converges before entering the right atrium, and how these surface veins map to surgical and electrophysiology landmarks. The small cardiac vein’s relationship to the right coronary artery and the right atrioventricular groove becomes relevant during right-sided epicardial dissection and when planning cannulation or exposure near the coronary sinus ostium.
