Description
Emerging from the posterior pole of the globe, the central retinal vein is traced anteriorly within the optic nerve head (papilla) and along the retinal surface where it divides into superior and inferior venules that course within the nerve fiber layer toward the four retinal quadrants. Nearby, the central retinal artery follows a similar path but remains smaller caliber, and both vessels sit deep to the vitreous body and internal limiting membrane while remaining enclosed by the scleral canal at the lamina cribrosa. Superimposed on an anterior skull view, the orbital rim, nasal aperture, maxilla, and zygomatic bones provide bony context, with the ophthalmic venous drainage implied as the retinal outflow converges posteriorly toward the cavernous sinus via the superior ophthalmic vein. Spatially, the retinal venous tree fans centrifugally from a medial optic disc to the peripheral retina. Clear and direct. Central retinal vein anatomy matters because the narrow passage through the lamina cribrosa and optic nerve sheath is a common bottleneck in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), where venous congestion produces dilated, tortuous veins and widespread intraretinal hemorrhages. That same anatomic corridor also explains why optic disc edema, raised intraocular pressure, or optic neuritis can secondarily compromise retinal venous return. For procedural planning, the orbital overlay reinforces how retrobulbar pathology and cavernous sinus processes can intersect with ocular venous drainage patterns.
