Description
Oriented to the knee region in an anterior-facing presentation, the popliteal vein is shown as the deep venous channel that continues proximally as the femoral vein after traversing the adductor hiatus. At the level of the joint line it lies posterior to the popliteal artery and deep to the popliteus, receiving paired venae comitantes from the anterior and posterior tibial veins inferiorly. Superficial drainage, including the great saphenous vein and its tributaries, is positioned in the subcutaneous tissue anteromedially and connects to the deep system via perforating veins. Relationship matters. Popliteal venous anatomy is a daily practical issue in lower-limb deep vein thrombosis, where thrombus often forms in the calf veins and propagates into the popliteal segment before embolizing to the pulmonary arteries. An anterior view helps clarify why duplex ultrasound interrogation targets the compressibility of the vein behind the knee and why the vessel can be difficult to assess in flexion when the vein becomes more closely apposed to surrounding musculotendinous structures. It also supports procedural planning for venous access and for avoiding iatrogenic injury during posterior knee approaches and arthroscopy portals that stray too deep.
