Description
Centered on the uterine isthmus, the narrow transitional zone between the corpus uteri and cervix, this 3D render logically includes the uterine cavity tapering inferiorly toward the internal uterine os (ostium uteri internum) and the superior cervical canal just below it. Superior to the isthmus sits the uterine body with its thicker myometrium, while inferiorly the cervix projects toward the vagina. Laterally, the uterine walls converge toward the uterine cornua and broad ligament attachments, even if adnexal structures are only implied. Clinically, the isthmus matters because it becomes the lower uterine segment in pregnancy, the site where a low transverse cesarean incision is typically placed to reduce blood loss and avoid the more contractile fundal myometrium. This is also the region assessed when describing placenta previa and placenta accreta spectrum, where abnormal placental implantation near the internal os drives hemorrhage risk and operative planning.
