Description
A fetus at 40 weeks of gestation lies within the amniotic cavity, shown in the flexed attitude typical of term: the vertex directed inferiorly, chin tucked toward the chest, hips and knees drawn up, and one foot crossing in front of the opposite thigh. Surface detail includes scalp hair, a well-formed auricle with defined helix and antihelix, plump subcutaneous fat over the trunk and limbs, and fully separated fingers and toes with nails reaching the fingertips. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal wall and spirals upward, its two umbilical arteries and single vein visible through the translucent cord surface, inserting into the disc-shaped placenta seated against the uterine wall behind the fetus. Fine vessels branching through the surrounding myometrium and decidua frame the scene. Week 40 represents completion of intrauterine growth, with fetal lungs, thermoregulation and suck-swallow coordination mature enough for extrauterine life.
