Description
At 40 weeks of gestation the fetus fills the uterine cavity, shown here curled in the characteristic flexed attitude with the head directed inferiorly in a cephalic presentation. The limbs are drawn close to the trunk, hands near the face and knees flexed toward the abdomen, while the scalp carries visible hair and the external ear, eyelids, fingers and toes are fully formed with defined nails. The umbilical cord loops from the anterior abdominal wall to the fetal surface of the placenta, its two umbilical arteries coiling around the single umbilical vein beneath the amniotic covering. The discoid placenta lies against the uterine wall behind the fetus, its chorionic plate vessels radiating toward the cord insertion, and the translucent amniotic membrane separates the fetus from the myometrium.
