Description
The fetus lies curled in the amniotic cavity with the head turned away from the viewer, showing a well-developed scalp with dense hair and a fully formed auricle with defined helix and lobule. The limbs are held in the characteristic flexed posture of the third trimester: knees drawn towards the trunk, one hand with separated fingers and nail beds resting near the chest, and a foot with distinct toes lying against the placental surface. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal wall and spirals towards the fetal surface of the disc-shaped placenta, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible as coiled vessels beneath the amnion. Behind the fetus, the vascularised uterine wall encloses the cavity, and the chorionic vessels fan out radially across the placental plate. By week 32 subcutaneous fat has begun to smooth the body contours, the skin appears less translucent, and lung maturation with surfactant production is well advanced, so this stage marks the transition to a high likelihood of survival with neonatal support.
