Description
At approximately 35 weeks of gestation the fetus fills most of the amniotic cavity, shown here in a flexed attitude with the head deflexed onto the chest, the arms adducted across the thorax and the hips and knees folded so the feet lie close to the trunk. Surface detail is well advanced for this stage: scalp hair covers the vertex, the external ear has a defined helix and lobule, the fingers and toes are fully separated with formed nails, and subcutaneous fat has smoothed the contours of the limbs and cheeks. The umbilical cord leaves the anterior abdominal wall and spirals toward the chorionic plate, where the paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein are visible as violet and red channels fanning out beneath the amnion. The discoid placenta is sectioned against the vascularised uterine wall, exposing the villous parenchyma and the maternal decidual surface. The final weeks of the third trimester are dominated by weight gain, brown fat deposition and pulmonary maturation, so imagery of this stage supports counselling around late preterm birth, surfactant status and thermoregulation in the newborn. Fetal lie, presentation and the degree of flexion depicted here relate directly to obstetric assessment by Leopold manoeuvres and ultrasound biometry, while the cord and placental insertion illustrate the anatomy behind cord accidents, velamentous insertion and placental insufficiency.
