Description
Centered in the mid thoracic spine, the T5 vertebra is highlighted within a lateral view of the vertebral column, with adjacent vertebrae stacked superiorly and inferiorly and separated by intervertebral discs. The vertebral body sits anterior to the vertebral arch, while the spinous process projects posteriorly in the typical thoracic down-sloping orientation. A relatively small, rounded vertebral foramen is implied posterior to the body, bounded by the pedicles and laminae. Costal facets on the body and transverse processes are expected at this level for articulation with the ribs, even when not individually emphasized. T5 is a practical landmark because it lies near the transverse thoracic plane (classically T4 to T5) and helps orient clinicians to mediastinal and airway levels during cross-sectional correlation. The thoracic vertebral canal is narrower than in the cervical region, so fractures, burst injuries, or posterior element encroachment at T5 can translate into clinically meaningful spinal cord compromise with less margin for error. Lateral bony-only presentation keeps attention on vertebral morphology and segmental alignment, which is often what you need when teaching thoracic kyphosis, compression fractures, or the mechanics of adjacent disc spaces.
