Description
Centered in the thoracic spine, the T9 vertebra sits inferior to T8 and superior to T10, with adjacent intervertebral discs separating each level. From a lateral or oblique spinal view, you would expect the vertebral body anteriorly, the vertebral arch and spinous process posteriorly, and the superior and inferior articular processes forming zygapophysial (facet) joints at the posterolateral margins. The facet surfaces at this mid thoracic level characteristically angle to permit rotation while limiting flexion and extension, and the slight posterior tilt of the articular surfaces becomes apparent when you compare the superior facets to the inferior facets across the same segment.
