Description
Arising from the maxillary artery, the middle meningeal artery enters the cranial cavity through the foramen spinosum and spreads between the periosteal and meningeal layers of dura mater along the inner table of the calvaria. Its main trunk typically divides into an anterior (frontal) branch that courses anterosuperiorly toward the pterion and a posterior (parietal) branch that runs posterosuperiorly across the parietal region, forming the familiar radiating dural arterial pattern. Superficial cerebral gyri and sulci appear beneath, while the superior sagittal sinus is shown in the midline with adjacent dural venous channels draining toward it. Clinically, this arterial territory is inseparable from epidural hematoma: the anterior branch is vulnerable where it grooves the squamous temporal bone near the pterion, and a lateral skull fracture here can produce rapid arterial bleeding that strips dura from bone. Landmark-level anatomy matters. The relationship between the dural arterial tracks, the calvarial sutures, and the midline venous sinus also supports teaching of why epidural collections are classically lens-shaped and limited by suture lines, in contrast to subdural hemorrhage that follows bridging veins to the dural sinuses.
