Description
Arising from the first part of the maxillary artery in the infratemporal fossa, the middle meningeal artery ascends superiorly and laterally toward the foramen spinosum, running deep to the temporalis muscle and adjacent to the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. After entering the cranial cavity, its frontal (anterior) branch courses anterosuperiorly toward the pterion, while the parietal (posterior) branch sweeps posterosuperiorly along the inner table of the squamous temporal and parietal bones. Grooves for the artery on the calvaria and its tight relationship to the dura mater make the vessel easy to localize in a lateral cranial view. Landmarks matter. Clinically, this is the arterial source classically implicated in epidural (extradural) hematoma after lateral head trauma, where a fracture crossing the pterion can lacerate the anterior branch and strip dura from bone. The proximity of the middle meningeal artery to the meningeal (recurrent) branch of V3 and the middle meningeal vein helps explain mixed neurovascular injury patterns, and it frames why endovascular middle meningeal artery embolization has emerged as an adjunct in select cases of chronic subdural hematoma. Surgical correlation is direct: burr hole or craniotomy planning around the temporal squama and sphenoid wing often references the expected course of the MMA to reduce iatrogenic bleeding. Neuroscience, neuroanatomy, and head and neck anatomy courses can use this artwork to teach dural vascular supply alongside cranial base foramina, temporalis relations, and the pterion as a surface landmark.
