Description

Arising from the temporal fossa on the lateral skull, the temporalis muscle fans inferiorly beneath the temporal fascia toward its tendon on the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus. Superficial fibers run infero-anteriorly toward the zygomatic arch, while deeper posterior fibers descend more vertically and contribute to mandibular retrusion. Bony landmarks that typically frame this region include the squamous part of the temporal bone, the superior and inferior temporal lines, and the zygomatic process. Female soft tissue contours over the temple and lateral orbit help orient the muscle’s superficial position relative to the masseter, which lies more inferior and lateral over the ramus. Functionally, this view matters because the temporalis is the dominant elevator of the mandible during biting and clenching, and its broad origin makes it a frequent generator of temporal headache pain patterns in bruxism and temporomandibular disorders. In temporal artery biopsy or frontotemporal craniotomy planning, the temporalis and its fascia define the dissection planes, and preserving the frontal branch of the facial nerve as it crosses the zygomatic arch is a constant concern.
